The Stardust on the Las Vegas Strip

Stardust Sign

After finally processing and returning the Federal Heath collection, we moved on to scanning a collection donated to us by sign designer Charles Barnard.

Barnard worked for the Ad-Art sign company and is responsible for creating many well-loved Las Vegas icons. This collection of photographs from his years in the sign industry dates from the 1960s to the 1980s and documents the creation of many famous Las Vegas signs, most notably the 1968 Stardust pylon.

One of the highlights of this collection is a photograph flipbook of the Stardust sign. The flipbook consists of photographs that have two holes punched on the side and held together by a rubber band loop. The back of the photos state it was from 1980 and that the photos were taken by William Hannapple, famed art photographer. A nice, unexpected treasure that shows the illumination sequence of the iconic Stardust sign.
