7 Unexpected Films That Feature Las Vegas

Let’s take a journey through some of these unexpected films, spanning from the classics to newer releases, that showcase the allure of Las Vegas.

“Boulder Dam” (1936)

Let’s start our cinematic exploration with the 1936 film “Boulder Dam.” While the film’s primary focus is on the construction of the Hoover Dam, its portrayal of the surrounding area gives us a glimpse of a young and evolving Las Vegas. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, “Boulder Dam” captures the spirit of hope and progress as thousands worked on this monumental project. Las Vegas appears as a small, dusty town on the cusp of transformation, hinting at the future glitz and glamor that would define it.

“Casablanca” (1942)

While most of “Casablanca” is set in the Moroccan city of the movie’s title, it’s worth noting that this timeless classic features a memorable scene in Las Vegas. In a brief yet significant moment, Las Vegas is mentioned by Captain Renault (Claude Rains) as he discusses his plans for fleeing to “a little village in the Nevada desert.”

Though not a central location in the film, this reference adds a touch of intrigue, hinting at the mystique of Las Vegas even in the 1940s. We feature Casablanca in our Viva Las Vegas! Movie Tour here at The Neon Museum.

“Superman” (1978)

Flying into the realm of superhero films, we land near Las Vegas with the iconic 1978 classic, “Superman.” Starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, this film features a memorable scene where Superman saves the day at the Hoover Dam.

While not entirely set in Las Vegas, this sequence showcases the stunning architecture of the dam and the breathtaking landscapes surrounding it. It serves as a reminder of the real-world marvels that exist just a short distance from the neon lights of the Strip.

“Vegas Vacation” (1997)

We couldn’t have a list of movies that feature Las Vegas without a nod to a comedic classic. “Vegas Vacation” (1997) takes us on a wild ride with the Griswold family as they embark on a vacation to the City of Lights. Led by Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, this film brings hilarity to the Vegas experience, from mishaps at the casinos to encounters with quirky characters. While the film leans into comedic exaggeration, it still captures the essence of Las Vegas as a place of adventure, unpredictability, and, of course, family fun.

“Last Vegas” (2013)

Moving into more recent territory, “Last Vegas” (2013) offers a comedic take on aging and friendship against the backdrop of Las Vegas. Starring acting legends like Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline, the film follows four lifelong friends who reunite for a bachelor party in Vegas. As they navigate the city’s temptations and rediscover the bonds of their friendship, “Last Vegas” combines humor with heartfelt moments, all set amidst the glitz and glamor of Sin City.

“The Gambler” (2014)

For a darker and more intense portrayal of Las Vegas, “The Gambler” (2014) delves into the world of high-stakes gambling and addiction. Mark Wahlberg stars as a literature professor with a secret life as a high-rolling gambler. As his addiction spirals out of control, he finds himself entangled with dangerous characters in the underbelly of Las Vegas. This film offers a gritty and raw depiction of the city’s darker side, showcasing the consequences of chasing fortune in the world’s gambling capital.

The Gambler is a remake of a 1974 film of the same name, also partially set in Las Vegas.

“Army of the Dead” (2021)

Bringing a unique twist to the Las Vegas setting, “Army of the Dead” (2021) combines heist and zombie genres in a thrilling adventure directed by Zack Snyder. Set in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas overrun by zombies, a group of mercenaries ventures into the quarantine zone to pull off a daring heist. The film blends action, suspense, and spectacle against the backdrop of the city’s iconic landmarks, presenting a Las Vegas unlike any other seen before in cinema.

These unexpected films offer a diverse look at Las Vegas from its early days to the present.
