FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a museum guided and a self-guided field trip?
Museum guided field trips are offered once a day and are led by museum staff for all activities. This includes an introduction to the museum, a tour of the museum and a handson activity based on the subject teachers select. Please note that while museum staff is leading this experience, chaperones and teachers are expected to engage with students
while on these field trips.
Self-guided field trips allow teachers and chaperones to lead engaging and educational experiences for their students while at The Neon Museum. Museum staff will be present to oversee the collection and assist with student entry and exit but will not provide guided instruction. Educators must inform museum staff of their plans for the field trip in advance.
What time are field trips?
Museum guided: 9:30am-11am Tuesday-Friday
Self-guided field trips: 9:30-10:30am, 10:45-11:45am, 12pm-1pm on 1st and 3rd Fridays
Field trips are scheduled when the museum is closed to the public. As a result, we are unable to accommodate field trips during our regular operating hours, including after school.
How do transportation and bus reimbursements work?
Schools are responsible for organizing their own transportation to the museum. Thanks to our generous donors we offer bus reimbursements for CCSD schools. Once your field trip(s) has been completed we will request the necessary information to process the reimbursement. Please note if your school uses a charter bus, reimbursement will be limited to the standard CCSD bus rates.
I homeschool my children. How can I sign up for a field trip?
While we currently cannot support field trips for individual families that are homeschooling, if you are part of a homeschool group or know a group that is interested, homeschool groups can request a field trip when our registration is open.
How many chaperones do you require?
For museum guided field trips, we ask for a ratio of 1 chaperone per 8 kids for grades K-3rd and 1 chaperone per 10 students for grades 4th-12th.
For self-guided field trips, we ask for a ratio of 1 chaperone for every 6 kids for grades K-5th and 1 for every 8 students for 6th-12th grade.
Exceptions may apply if you are bringing students who require 1:1 assistance, or if you are part of a homeschool group.
If you would like to bring additional chaperones, please notify education@neonmuseum.org to submit your request. Approval is not guaranteed, as space may be limited. Chaperones exceeding the required ratio will be charged $10, which must be paid before the field trip date. Unapproved or unpaid additional adults will result in a $20 fee per person charged to the school.
I have been confirmed as a chaperone for my child’s field trip, can I bring my child who is not in the class?
Our field trips are intended to be educational and engaging field trips for specific grade levels and class subjects that educators have selected for their students. As a chaperone we ask you to support the students’ education and safety at the museum. Children who are not part of the class are not permitted on field trips as a guest of chaperones. We also ask that strollers are not brought into the museum on field trips.
How can I request accessibility accommodation for students, teachers, or chaperones attending a field trip?
To ensure the best experience for all participants, the field trip request form includes a section where educators can provide accommodation details for attendees. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at education@neonmuseum.org.
Can we arrive early or stay after the field trip?
During field trips, the museum is closed to the public and open exclusively for school groups. As a result, groups are not permitted to arrive early or stay beyond their scheduled visit.
Can my group have lunch at the Museum after our visit?
Field trips are scheduled when the museum is closed to the public. As a result, we are unable to host groups for an extended stay to eat lunch at the Museum. There is a city owned park across the street from the Museum that groups are welcome to use for snacks and lunch following their field trip, however, museum staff will not be on site to assist once the field trip has ended.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that some field trips may be booked more than a year in advance. Throughout the school year, we send reminder emails to confirm your trip. If you need to cancel, please provide at least six weeks’ notice so we can offer the opportunity to another CCSD school on our waitlist. While we understand that unexpected situations may arise, schools that cancel with less than two weeks’ notice may not be invited to return the following year.
Is the gift shop open during my field trip?
Unfortunately, the gift shop is not open during field trips.
I have another question that is not answered here.
We are happy to help, please contact education@neonmuseum.org.
